red, ive met cuban exiles too... and ur right about one thing... they are usually upset about the stifling dissent stuff... thank god in freedom loving america we have always allowed folks to meet in large groups to plot the overthrow of our government...
ok, it's not "great" but it's also not horrible. I do know the Cubans love their food and music

secretly?

nope. they can leave they must seek permission from the state to travel abroad (passport in america), they have internet but it is monitored by the government (hmm heard of that somewhere before) and when they do leave, they can't travel to certain places. (americans arent supposed to go to cuba via american port of exit... fact is, with a few exceptions, the restrictions on them are little different than a good deal of other non communist countries. what one is really left with, upon honest examination, is that it boils down to a "quality of life" issue in the end (which is purely opinion based). i told a priest one time as he explained that i was going to hell, "given enuff time, a feller will get used to anything"...

The government provides day care both as a means of freeing women up to work, and also as a way to start education in socialist values early. At first there were both alternative and mainstream centers: The alternative centers (based on the Swedish model) emphasized free play, inter-age groupings, flexibility, and exploration, and the mainstream centers focused on cleanliness, structured learning, achievement, and fixed schedules. In 1971, all programs were centralized and only the mainstream approach was continued. Centers emphasize group play, and children are overtly taught that they should be part of a group. One observer has found that day care centers try to break down sexist attitudes: Boys play with dolls or pretend to be nurses, while girls pretend to be the household providers or doctors.

yeah, thatd never fly here in the states...

well, I get that. if you look at the Anthony Bourdain show I linked to it's beautiful in Cuba. Admittedly a little "shabby" (his word), but people sure are having fun. Which one would expect in a place where you go to work, get free health care and you know you will never be homeless.

I mean, what a load off one's mind! believe me, I spent years wondering if I was going to be homeless.

but china "also" has internet. it's just not MY internet. Considering how important the internet is - or can be if used properly - that is a deal breaker for me in living in either place.

The last guy was bad, but Obama has taken it to a whole new level. Just because you want to stick your head in the sand doesn't make it go away. Have you forgot the NDAA, Guantanamo, non-prosecutions of historic white collar crimes, persecution of whistle blowers?

ndaa - obama said not against american citizens, as for not prosecuting bankers, no party seems too thrilled to do that, gitmo is a strange issue, if he shuts it down and one of them flys a plane into your house, it'll be because he was a dumbass and how could he... and as for whistleblowers... well depends on what whistle you blow i guess... worked out well for one person... a crooked banker

IRS pays whistleblower $104 million

Faethor guessed:
"If memory serves Reagan changed (manipulated some would say) the system so people fall off the counting faster. Now when their own fearless leader's doing bites them in the butt Republicans kvetch."
------------------------------

Like most of your guesses, that one was wrong also.

A man by the name of Carroll D. Wright head of the Massachusetts Bureau of the Statistics of Labor invented the method used to calculate unemployment for the state of Massachusetts.

He left that job to head up the new Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics in the 1880's and took his method with him. He knew his method of not counting people unless they had actually looked for work in the past four weeks was wrong, but as head of the new agency, he used it anyway, and it has been wrong ever since.
Nope Fade just another case of right wing memory loss. Perhaps memory loss is why it's called the 'Goddamn Old People'. In 83 the constraints on unemployment statistics were changed. Also they dropped teens from being counted. Reagan went from 10% to 5% unemployment overnight. Sorry Fade you are wrong the USA has changed how we counted unemployed since 1880. We can't directly compare and must modify the calculations accordingly. For example using today's methods the Depression would carry a lower unemployment rate. It'd be closer to 15%.

The Bureau of labor and Statistics indicates the last major change was 1994.

You may want to check this out. http://www.bls.gov/cps/eetech_methods.pdf Especially the section on historical comparability. You may be interested in knowing In 1983 the BLS decided: Persons in the Armed Forces stationed in the United States will be included in the national labor force and employment totals and thus in the base for the overall unemployment rate. By adding millions of soldiers, sailors and marines to the Labor Pool, unemployment rate was driven down.

I was 12 how do you old guys not remember this?

Bringing it full circle. How about Reagan's Assistant Sec. Of the Treasurer when he says using the old 1980 method of unemployment it'd be 22%? Does a right wing appointee Paul Craig Roberts help your recall?

Teenagers changed? Yeah, it was changed. Changed back to where it was in the beginning. Adults! It's been changed many times. And the last time it was changed was not 1994. It was Jan, 2011, under Obama. Just more categories to throw more people into so they won't be counted in the "official" unemployment figures. Do try to keep up.

Fade I should have had a more friendly approach. When you make false assertions, such no changes to unemployment calculations or no change from Reagan, and add insult it can be difficult. Glad I could catch you up with 1980s and 1990s recent history in my post.

He knew his method of not counting people unless they had actually looked for work in the past four weeks was wrong, but as head of the new agency, he used it anyway, and it has been wrong ever since.

It depends on what you are trying to measure. If you are looking at it from a production point of view, like a business, people who are not looking for work really aren't available for work. It could be that the person thinks the pay is not worth the effort of earning it, or that their labour is more productive to themselves doing something else or they could be too sick or have a sick family member to look after, etc. In a measure of economic potential, people not looking for work are as irrelevant to economic output as oil inaccessible to extraction.

Obviously it is the owners of industry that care about and bother measuring unemployment as it is of most interest to them. Other people might have different views about what a good economy should produce but you don't find daily news reports on job satisfaction statistics, or amount of quality free time, or household stress.

I have talked to them and I know exactly what they think. There is a reason Cuban-Americans as a block vote Republican. They hate Castro and they hate Communism. No American Democrat wet dream will change their views.
2012 exit polling indicates a near even split between the two presidential candidates. 2nd and 3rd generation polled as supporting Obama.
