Suddenly vaccine skepticism has gone mainstream.

Since I'm probably seen as stubbornly anti-vaxxer here for the sake of being anti-vaxxer, I'll post this.

I went out and got the JnJ coof jab (single dose) today. I've not changed my positions on anything. I only did it for some specific family considerations. If I didn't have my family, I probably never would have done it. Don't expect me to get on a soap box and start singing the praises of the coof jab(s). Nor will I start browbeating people into submitting. Jab mandates will always be unconstitutional. I made my own decision and that's that.

As for how it went? The jab itself was not bad. As time goes on though I am feeling pretty rough. Low to mid level nausea, jitteriness and a (bad) feeling of intoxication. I'm sure I'll be fine though. They should put some morphine in the coof jabs. At least I'd have some euphoria along with the intoxication feeling!

No shame in that. You have to do what you feel is right for you and those close to you.
I just found out two close friends who are double vaccinated have caught it. I was due to be meeting them tomorrow but they're isolating. They're both in their 50s and both only have mild cold symptoms so far. That's the first close friends who've caught it after being vaccinated.

I just found out an older guy I know who is double vaxxed has just been intubated with COVID pneumonia. Survival rate for intubated patients in about 60% these days I hear, but still not the best of odds.

you keep insisting on misrepresenting those of us who support science, facts, evidence, and vaccinations.
NO ONE is "browbeating" you. Encouraging people to get vaccinated is not abusive and certainly not violent.
I simply state facts and links to facts. What YOU or anyone does with that is entirely your business.

This may surprise you but I don't care if you got vaccinated or not. Not because I don't care about your health, but because it's none of my business. That said, I'm glad for YOUR sake and the sake of your family that you did get vaccinated. You may have averted death or long covid.

I'm guessing you discussed this with your doctor. And THAT is why there will never be "universal" vaccine mandates because it's still a medical decision. I've suggested so many times I've lost count that if one has questions they should address those to their doctor. They SHOULD never use farcebook or any other idiotic "social media" to make medical decisions. They can read scientific papers and then go see their doctor. That's because if you have a good doctor THAT person knows YOU and your medical history.

When I was young and most kids got the smallpox and polio vaccines, there was a huge effort to get as many children vaccinated. But, since most parents had grown up seeing the results of polio, few people objected.
There have always been antivaxxers, but now we have disinformation machines flooding the internet feeding these people's fears. And it's killing people.

I wasn't accusing anyone on this site of browbeating. I've certainly felt it out in the real world though, including my job.

I'm sorry you felt pressured at your job.
However, an employer has the right to make certain demands of his/her employees as a condition of staying on the job.
That's been true since forever.

If your doctor helped you with this and suggested the J&J vaccine, then you are fine.

Just be glad you averted death.

RNA vaccines seem to produce very different antibody levels

Result raises questions about correlation between protection and antibody levels.

Image of a woman taking a blood sample from a seated person.

A phlebotomist draws blood meant for antibody testing.

We've tended to treat the RNA-based vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech as functionally equivalent. They take an identical approach to producing immunity and have a very similar set of ingredients. Clinical trial data suggested they had very similar efficacy—both in the area of 95 percent.
So it was a bit of a surprise to have a paper released yesterday indicating that the two produce an antibody response that's easy to distinguish, with Moderna inducing antibody levels that were more than double that seen among people who received the Pfizer/BioNTech shot. While it's important not to infer too much from a single study, this one was large enough that the results are likely to be reliable. If so, the results serve as a caution that we might not want to base too many of our expectations on relatively crude measures of antibody levels.

The hypocracy of these antivaxxers!
They scream about their own bodily autonomy but are preventing others from having the right to get vaccinated.

My doctor (specialist) actually recommended I hold off.
So why didn't this doctor write you up an exemption?
This just sounds fishy.
"Holding off" in a state with a low vaccination rate and huge, climbing covid case numbers isn't wise. It's dangerous. Especially when the predominant variant is incredibly infectious.
I live in a state where we have reasonably good vaccination rates and the hospitals are not being overwhelmed by cases. One friend is "Holding off" just going to her doctor because I'm sure she knows he'll tell her to get vaccinated. That's just my sense of it. But because everyone around her is vaccinated we are like a wall protecting her.
So, no one is bullying her to see her doctor. It will happen eventually. Meanwhile we are being as safe as possible.

So why didn't this doctor write you up an exemption?

He did actually. I was able to use it as a firewall for months, though the browbeating never stopped. In the end I decided to regardless, for my own reasons, not work pressure. I survived obviously ;-)

You got very lucky to not get infected during those months. If most of your co-workers got vaccinated, you can thank them.

I'd be very nervous to live in Florida

That's one the major reasons I chose J&J over the mRNA stuff.
Interesting, given one of the findings of the study is that, despite the difference in antibody levels, there currently doesn't seem to be any major benefit in choosing one over the other, with the obvious caveat of more research being required.
Perhaps of more interest to you is this speculative inference from the study:
it's worth considering whether we might be placing a little too much emphasis on antibody levels in our decision-making. Right now, arguments about the need for boosters are based in part on the fact that antibody levels drop over time, even though that's a normal consequences of the shift away from a response to an active infection and toward a functional immune memory of that infection.

I'm back to thinking it's only a matter of time before I catch it. My work has me in pretty close contact to hundreds of people every day and infection rates in Glasgow are through the roof, with more and more vaccinated people catching it.

Yeah. Michigan is all heading in the wrong way, too. Sent my son to in-person schooling this year. I didn't want him to miss the first year of Jr. High. It's such an important time for social development. I really hope that wasn't the wrong decision. He's still a year too young for the vaccine. Our county at least has a mask mandate, so that is something. I can't imagine the schools where they banned masks. Just insane.

As for myself, I had yet another person try to pick me off with COVID at work last week. So far I seem to have resisted. I'm still only a little past 4 months since full vaccination (Pfizer), and they say it should stay most effective through at least 8. So, fingers crossed that I have dodged yet another asshole trying to injure my family.
