Last night, too late really, I decided to upgrade the site from Xenforo 1.5.0 to 1.5.1 when I got bitten in the ass (proverbially speaking).

Site got stuck in a "site's closed for upgrading / upgrade file not found" loop where I uploaded the files (which closes the site) but then when I went to upgrade, the site reported that the upgrade.php file was not found...

Had to fire off an S.O.S. to the support team who investigated overnight and found a custom .htaccess...

Here's the deal. If I survive tax season this year, I will need to start investing in the business for next year's taxes. To that end, I'm still considering purchasing Social Engine or other site software.

My question is, if (and it's all theoretical at this point) if I moved Whyzzat to different software like that, would you follow, or would that be the final straw?

The intent -- taxes aside -- really is to move to a more user-centric software that's a lot more inviting than...

As part of the transition to SocialEngine, the archive site, archive.whyzzat.com is up and running.

It's running in "shadow mode", meaning it's essentially a live copy of the site you're now using, and it's using the same database and tables. All changes and posts are reflected in both places simultaneously.

SocialEngine was purchased last night and is sitting on my hard drive waiting on either Friday night or...

I know you guys are sick of hearing about me tinkering, and I apologize, but once again, I invite (read: plead, beg, cajole) your help.

I just downloaded a fresh 30-day trial of the full SocialEngine PHP platform and installed it at flusterduck.com. I'm debating purchasing a theme, but it seems kinda silly to invest in a theme (layout) before I actively purchase the program.

I'm tinkering with SocialEngine (the web software) and considering using it to either start a new site, or to replace Whyzzat with something a little more open and controllable (and fun).

If you can, PLEASE help me out by going to my test site (http://flusterduck.socialengine.com) and dive in to test it out.

Right now, it's the free engine. It's not customized at all and it's running on their cloud, but I'm seriously considering investing in it for another site I already...

The brown edge background is starting to wear on me a bit so I'm starting to look at designing a more "permanent" solution.

Design-wise, as you can tell via the old Whyzzat, and the current salemspectator.com, I tend to strive for an "earthy", brown, "homey" sort of thing. While Apple might hate me because it's rather "skeuromorphic" and shit, I find it rather a great mix of professional and calming..

New User registration has been opened again, all the spam catchers let loose, but...

Over the last couple of weeks, we've caught and deleted a couple of bot accounts but there have been several new accounts created which are -- at best -- questionable.

Hopefully they're good people, but chances are a few of them are just spambots because all these new members are being totally silent (no posts at all). That's almost 99% indicative of bots, so be on the lookout for spammers and...

I know right now you're thinking you truly HATE the new changes to the site. Rest assured, you're not alone. This is a LONG post but PLEASE read it. It's important.

This afternoon, I upgraded the site from version 1.1.5 to 1.3.1 out of necessity. That's basically what happens when the developers move on and stop supporting older versions (much like Microsoft).

What I didn't count on was the theme we were using was no longer compatible, and no development on that...

Since "they" (whomever they are) are now placing adverts in the news articles, I will be discontinuing the front page news thingy until a suitable workaround can be found.

I'm also at the point where we need to upgrade the site's software. Unfortunately the theme we currently use has been discontinued and is no longer compatible with the new software, so I will be working to find a new theme/layout that works.
