I think it is highly likely we will see such an event in our lifetimes where there are food riots. In 1992 people started to think a hurricane would never hit Florida again since it had been more than 2 decades since the last one hit. Then Hurricane Andrew hit. I saw first hand the aftermath of Andrew in 1992. I saw the aftermath of Katrina in 2005, not just in LA but it also hit FL. Look at the chaos in LA after Katrina which played out heavily on the news around the world.

Living in Broward County, Florida, the scariest time was after Hurricane Wilma in 2005. Most grocery stores didn't open for over a week after the storm. My neighborhood was without power for 2 weeks. Most gas stations didn't open for 4-5 days and when they did open, there were lines literally for 1/4 mile or longer. All phone services were down, land lines, cell phones, everything. I was prepared and it still got dicey. When the local grocery store did open 7+ days later, it was mobbed and the shelves were mostly bare after a couple hours. At gas stations people got in fist fights and weapons were pulled. This scene played out not just in a small area, but through about a 1/3 of the state and Florida is a very big state.

My experiences have given me a small taste of what could happen and probably will happen. Wilma was a category 1 hurricane. Food supply is the US and Canada is fragile. If there was a major crop failure of just corn in the US, food prices would go out of the reach of much of the population.

Going back to he point of producing your own food, laws against it are simply about control. If gov has the power to control whether you eat or not, they have 100% control over you. Don't be a slave.
