Syria is a corridor between oil rich Northern Iraq and Western Iran and terminals on the coast in Israel. If Syria were under a US security regime (with a couple of US bases) then pipelines could be held and flows managed - Israel would have extra income from transit and port fees. Forget about the Straight of Hormuz, forget about Suez. Israel becomes the oil terminal to Southern Europe and out through the Straight of Gibraltar to the US. Gibraltar is firmly in the hands of friends of the US. It's a very strategic bit of real estate.

Israel already has a pipeline connecting their oil port to northern Iraq oil fields. Not sure if it's still in use though.
