This really isn't anything new I'm afraid. Border guards have always had complete control over who goes in and who gets the white glove treatment before they get kicked out. And they don't need any reason and you can't appeal their decision either. These two will need a pardon from some high up government official to get back into the US, and they may still be black listed for life. And all this has nothing to do with 9/11 or HMS, it was like that 10 years ago. And it's also true for Canadian border guards as well. If you do some googling I'm sure you'll find some nightmare stories involving Canadian customs dating back many years.

Of course, I'm not justifying any of this, just saying it's nothing new. But it's also something we should be aware of.

Sadly true. Most Americans could care less. Human rights are less important than who Snookey did smoosh smoosh with or who is singing on American Idle.

Then again, it is hilarious to suggest the UK is any better.

After reading that all i can say is they deserve what they get. If you write bollocks on your facebook or twitter you only really have yourself to blame. Sure they were treated harshly and it was over the top but why did they write it in the first place? I can accept that "destroy" may be slang for partying hard but it's still a dumb word to use despite its meaning.

Homeland Security is just a bunch of uneducated bullies.

just because the words "tourists" and "terrorists" start with a "T" doesn't mean they are the same

No they don't. It's just guards being meat-heads. Back in the day if you had said that to your mates before going to the US no-one would be any the wiser. So, saying something in twitter now makes you a threat even when you quite obviously said something which you couldn't possibly accomplish and you had broadcast it publicly. This is just TSA idiocy and it makes them feel tough and they get to push people around.

You yourself are probably transgressing and violating tens of rules and regulations and laws every day and if someone decided to mess around with you by calling you on them, any reasonable person might see that since there are so many regs and we can't be aware of them all it would be unreasonable to rake you arbitrarily over the coals - but someone somewhere will pipe up and say - well, it's your own damn fault because ignorance is no excuse.

If there IS a lesson here it's - don't use twitter, don't use texts, don't use facebook and never write anything down - because if you do some dick will find it and twist it against you.
