They didn't have a choice - well, they did - the choice was to die out. And you are wrong when you say that is untrue. God fearing people's morality is just as plastic and sometimes more so than non-God fearing people. However, the point is moot. Only the elites in the US were not god fearing. The majority of the population were god fearing (since it was the only socially acceptable norm) and they did marry first cousins.
