Hi,

I'm tinkering with SocialEngine (the web software) and considering using it to either start a new site, or to replace Whyzzat with something a little more open and controllable (and fun).

If you can, PLEASE help me out by going to my test site (http://flusterduck.socialengine.com) and dive in to test it out.

Right now, it's the free engine. It's not customized at all and it's running on their cloud, but I'm seriously considering investing in it for another site I already run to build a social network for hundreds...

I could really, really use your help and input.

Thanks,

Wayne

Invitation request sent. Looks interesting and I see what you mean about it looking a little facebooky.

That said, it doesn't seem nearly as heavy as that site in terms of loading the page.

There are themes to make it look pinteresty or Twitter/reddity by default, and there are some really nice paid themes. It appears to be exactly what I'm searching for to play with. The only thing stopping me from biting is the price...

So far, I'm really enjoying tinkering with it. At least really the possibilities that SocialEngine provides. I just wish it didn't cost so damned much to get started... At $300, I might install it on several sites. At $450, it's a much bigger leap of faith.

Cool. Still testing it out. Wanting to give it a go somewhere, but at $500 for the setup, I would *really* have to have some sort of dedication to monetize it, meaning a good domain/branding/etcetera.

So far, the only real unused asset I own is dndplayer.com, which has potential for people who play D&D. I did when I bought the domain like 10 years ago, but I haven't really since then. I'm open to ideas..

I even jokingly thought about putting up an Amiga-related community. I'm evil like that :)

Well, I found myself getting a little excited* at the prospect of the new OS4.1 CD that should be winging its way to me soon, so I'd be onboard for that.

*Can't remember the last time I actually gave a toss about anything computery.

I'm now looking at other (free) software such as Oxwall, Pligg, and Elgg on the actual flusterduck.com domain. Feel free to join there too to play. The problem as I see it is that no other software really gets what I'm going for in the "facebooky" kinda way. Pligg is pretty much a Reddit style news poster, Elgg seems to be VERY much behind the curve in user interface, and Oxwall (which you can currently see on flusterduck.com) is a bit behind on good, solid themes. Correction, they have good themes, they're just not what I'm looking for.

Suggestions anyone?

Cecilia, if you take a look at flusterduck.com right now, I just put that theme up. Like you, I like it best, though I'd want another bg color than the stark black.. Maybe a light grey or something, but I'm getting there.
