using thistechnology for space exploration would still require the ship to run UV grow-lamps and water systems to the plants, and that water would need to be sprayed over the surface of the leaves rather than naturally distributed by a plant’s circulatory system. Dead chloroplasts also can’t be naturally replaced as in a real plant, and they bear no fruit or other secondary resources for astronauts. A long-haul trip through space will require a more robust and replaceable system than these silk-leaves can provide

I would have thought allowing them to circulate in a liquid medium would be better. That way you can continually add new chloroplasts while extracting old ones and you can add CO2 and remove O2 in a centralized place.
However, you still need a way to create choroplasts. Why not just circulate plant cells (or algae) with CO2 and sewage?
