Marti Huizenga, supporter of 'kids and critters,' dies at 74

While Marti Huizenga is more known locally, her husband Wayne Huizenga is probably known by all as the very high profile owner of Blockbuster Video during it's heyday. He's also known for Waste Management, Autonation, as well as one time owner of the Florida Marlins, Florida Panthers and Miami Dolphins.

Marti served on boards of many organizations including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County and the Humane Society of Broward County. Her philanthropic contributions included donations to Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University in Davie, and the local arts.

Supafly? I'd thought he had already passed away a few years ago. That was definitely the golden age of the WWF, though.

This post is a bit homer-ish, but besides local sports reporting he was known and respected nationally for decades. Locally his impact on sports is unparalleled in modern times. We will never see another sports reporter actually have a profound influence on a major market team.

Legendary Miami Herald sports columnist Edwin Pope dies at 88

He was among a select group of sports columnists nationally whose views carried weight even in the pre-Internet era.

“Nobody ever enjoyed what they did as much as I did,” Pope said in a phone conversation in 2015. “I enjoyed every single minute of it. Never one minute did I ever want to be anything else from the time I was 11 years old, except the brief time in college at Georgia when I wanted to be a fighter.

“Writing was very natural to me, never any work. It was as natural to me as eating and walking and breathing.”

His impact and legacy extended beyond his columns. When Dolphins owner Joe Robbie asked Pope who should be hired to replace George Wilson as Dolphins coach in 1970, Pope suggested Don Shula, who was coaching the Baltimore Colts.

“Robbie immediately went after that like a shark going after bait,” Pope said.

Robbie asked Bill Braucher, another Herald columnist, to contact Shula because they were both John Carroll alumni and knew each other.

“Edwin was instrumental in me coming down here,” Shula said in a 2015 interview. “I had so much respect for Edwin. He was a wordsmith, one of a kind. Great writer.”

Well that sucks. He may not be a household name, but he was a member of Black Sabbath for over a quarter of a century.

The ‘father of Pac-Man’ dies

The Father of Pac-Man Masaya Nakamura, who pioneered the release of Pac-Man and founded the Japanese video game company behind the iconic game, has died at the age of 91.

Nakamura, who died on January 22, founded Namco in 1955, which started out as just two mechanical horse rides on a department store rooftop but went on to pioneer game arcades and amusement parks.

Pac-Man, designed by Namco engineer and video game maker Toru Iwatani, went on sale in 1980, and has since been played an estimated 10billion times.

Guinness World Records has named it the world's most successful coin-operated arcade game.

KITTIE Bassist TRISH DOAN Dead At 31

trishdoankittierip_638.jpg

Born in Gwangju, South Korea (about 270 kilometers from the capital Seoul), Doan joined KITTIE in 2005 and was in the band for two years before leaving in 2007 and then rejoining in 2012. She can be heard on KITTIE's 2006 EP "Never Again" and the 2007 full-length album "Funeral For Yesterday".

In early 2008, it was reported that Doan originally left KITTIE due to the eating disorder anorexia-athletica-nervosa, which she had been struggling with for almost two years.

Doan relocated to Australia in 2009 to get a degree and try to surf before returning to Canada in 2011. She apparently moved back to Australia in 2013 and kept an active Twitter account and Facebook page where she frequently posted about her life struggles and battles with depression.

George ‘The Animal’ Steele, WWE Hall of Famer, dead at 79

Wrestling icon George “The Animal” Steele has died the WWE announced Friday. He was 79.

Steele entered hospice care on Thursday, longtime wrestling agent Eric Simms said in a Facebook post. Last May, Steele revealed that he was dealing with serious health issues. He was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in 1988 and had his colon removed in 2002.

Condolences poured in from all corners of the wrestling community, including from Hulk Hogan.

“George‘the Animal’Steel (sic) ,RIP my bother, only love, only grateful. HH,” Hogan tweeted Friday morning.

Born William James Myers in Detroit, he began wrestling in the 1960s under the stage name “The Student” and wore a mask to protect his identity as a high school teacher and football coach. He later adopted the name he’d become known for from a rival coach in his home state.

“The Animal” was known for his unique schtick, which included biting the padding off of the ring’s turnbuckle and smashing his opponent’s face into the exposed roping behind it. He feuded with “Macho Man” Randy Savage over the affection of Miss Elizabeth, taunted opponents with his trademark green tongue and carried a stuffed animal friend named “Mine” which shared Steele’s bald head and hairy chest look. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1995.

A bit local Detroitish, but not exactly, we lost Mike Illitch a few days ago. Mr I, as he was called around here, was the founder of Little Caesars pizza, and owner of the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings. A man who believed in Detroit back in the darkest days of the 80's and 90's.

One of my favorite pictures from Detroit sports history. The new owner of the Red Wings shaking hands with his first draft pick. Some kid named Steve Yzerman. That turned out pretty well. Thanks for the memories, Mr. I.

From the same generation of wrestlers, but didn't have as long of a career so not quite the household name. Not a good year for old wrestlers :-(
